Manufacturing Expo & Career Fair Attracts Students and Job Seekers

EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – October 18, 2019 –  Students, families and job seekers explored the exciting field of manufacturing and gathered information about jobs and creative career opportunities at the Manufacturing Expo & Career Fair, a free, public event, held Thursday, Oct. 17 at Vinal Technical High School in Middletown.

The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) joined with Vinal Technical High School and Middlesex Community College to present the event during Connecticut. Dream It. Do. It. Manufacturing Month.

“The Manufacturing Expo & Career Fair gave those attending a unique opportunity to meet and talk directly with manufacturers who are hiring for a variety of jobs,” said Alyce Stiles, associate director, experiential STEM education, CCAT. “Participants also learned about industry educational programs and toured Vinal Tech’s manufacturing shops to discover more about new technologies.”

CCAT led interactive activities that featured cutting-edge manufacturing technologies and showcased student-produced, winning videos from the statewide “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” video competition. One of the technologies demonstrated, the SmartMFG app, used augmented reality to enable students to design, manufacture, and test a flying drone.

“Our relationship with CCAT helps attract and retain students in our manufacturing programs at Vinal Tech, given CCAT’s strong reach into the manufacturing community,” said Javette Allen, Vinal Tech principal. “Ultimately, our partnership helps ensure we are developing a talented workforce for Connecticut’s manufacturing companies.”

Manufacturers agree. “The Magic of Manufacturing is unknown to so many – yet the results are seen every day in our possessions.  It’s imperative we let the up and coming generation know that manufacturing exists and that they can be part of the creations of the future,” said Lynn Bousquet, director of human resources, Connecticut Spring and Stamping.
