Six students apart of the Knowledge 2 Careers Academy Program completed 18-hour hands on training at CCAT’s Advanced Manufacturing Center and graduated the program last week.
The Knowledge 2 Careers Program was established by the KRA Corporation through Capital Workforce Partners (CWP) in partnership with the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. for Tooling U and on the job training.
The program, geared toward out of school youth between the ages of 18-24 in Hartford, East Hartford, and Manchester, aims to give the students increased knowledge in work readiness, financial literacy, math, shop-safety, machining principles and processes, blue print reading, and exposure to skill trades and technology. These students participate in a one week job readiness workshop, receive 21st Century Job Search Tools, are provided a workshop on Financial Literacy and take the MAT test. The last portion of the program includes Tooling U training, which is administered by CCAT in a 72 hour online pre-apprenticeship training module. Once completed they are earmarked for placement through company tours and interviews scheduled through CCAT’s Career Navigators.
Additionally, a segment has been introduced through CCAT’s Advanced Manufacturing Center for hands on, on the job training. These six students completed their Tooling U training but had no hands-on exposure to manufacturing machines, so they participated in an in-depth 18 hour training component where they got firsthand training with CCAT’s Manufacturing Applications Engineer John von Roemer using a few different pieces of equipment including the Mazak Variaxis 630-5X-II-T milling machine. Among the skills they learned include the basics of setting up a work space, drilling, inspecting and measurements.
