A conversation with Third Wave Systems about turning machining simulation into better production decisions.
Every trial cut costs manufacturers time, material and machine capacity. We asked William Howell, instructor of Third Wave Systems’ Machining Modeling Intensive, delivered in collaboration with CCAT, how simulation can help—and what participants can expect from the course.

What is the Machining Modeling Intensive, and what makes it different from other manufacturing training programs?
Machining Modeling Intensive is a hands-on, three-day training program that teaches engineers, machinists, and programmers how to use machining simulation to improve manufacturing processes before cutting a single part. The course gives attendees unprecedented hands-on access to Third Wave Systems’ full suite of machining modeling software. Participants learn how modeling tools can accelerate their workflows, leading to faster process development, improved part quality, and greater confidence in manufacturing decisions.
How are manufacturers using machining modeling today, and where are you seeing the biggest opportunities for improvement?
Companies across a wide range of industries use machining modeling to boost productivity. From cutting tool manufacturing and aerospace to automotive and medical applications, machining modeling gives companies the tools they need to take their operations to the next level. The biggest opportunities for improvement come from using modeling tools earlier in the process and leveraging simulation wherever possible. The best problems are those that can be identified and avoided well in advance. Introducing tools earlier in the development process gives engineers the insight they need to do so.
What are some common misconceptions about machining modeling, and how do you address them during the training?
One common misconception is that machining modeling is useful only for large manufacturers or highly specialized applications. In fact, companies of all sizes can benefit from using machining modeling to reduce machine trials, improve first-pass yield, and lower overall costs. Another misconception is that machining modeling is too complex or requires a PhD to use. During the training, participants learn practical step-by-step methods for applying machining modeling to real manufacturing challenges. Through hands-on exercises, attendees learn how machining modeling can fit into existing workflows, helping them make more informed decisions with greater confidence.
Can you share a real-world example that demonstrates the impact of machining modeling?
Sure! Recently, a New England aerospace supplier integrated machining modeling tools into its workflow, resulting in significant improvements across its development and manufacturing processes. The company reduced machining cycle time by up to 50%, improved quality and surface finish, and accelerated New Product Introduction (NPI) timelines. It also avoided hundreds of thousands of dollars in unplanned capital expenditures that might otherwise have been needed to address manufacturing challenges.
What do you hope participants will be able to do differently after completing the intensive?
After completing the Machining Modeling Intensive course, participants will understand how machining modeling can help them make more informed manufacturing decisions. By gaining skills and hands-on experience with modeling software, attendees will be able to see how the integration of machining modeling into their existing workflows can reduce development time, improve first-pass success, and create high-quality parts faster.
