Designing for Additive Manufacturing is a 20-hour, hands-on technical course focused on equipping engineers and designers with the principles and practical skills required to optimize parts for additive manufacturing (AM) processes.

Description

This intensive 20-hour course provides participants with a thorough understanding of additive manufacturing (AM) design principles and their practical applications across industries. The training emphasizes hands-on learning with proven methodologies, bridging the gap between traditional manufacturing and the innovation enabled by additive manufacturing.

Upon completion, participants will have mastered both “Modify for AM” techniques to optimize existing designs for additive manufacturing and “Design for AM” methodologies to create innovative designs that leverage AM’s unique capabilities. The training also focuses on identifying cost drivers and opportunities for significant savings through strategic AM implementation.

Schedule

Wednesday, March 25: 8:30am – 4:30pm

Thursday, March 26: 8:30am – 4:30 pm

Location: Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology Training Lab, 222 Pitkin Street, Suite 101, East Hartford

Friday, March 27:  8:30am – 12:30pm, Tour Included

Location: CCAT Advanced Technology Center: 409 Silver Lane, East Hartford

Learning Objectives

The course is organized into five comprehensive modules that build upon each other to create a complete learning experience:

Module 1: Discover AM – Provides foundational knowledge and introduces participants to the broader landscape of additive manufacturing technologies and applications.

Module 2: AM Technologies &Materials – Delves deeper into the technical aspects of various AM processes and the materials that enable them, providing participants with the knowledge needed to make informed technology selection decisions.

Module 3: AM Process Considerations – Demonstrates how to identify candidate parts for additive manufacturing, understands Modifying for Additive Manufacturing (MfAM) vs Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM) differences, and how to overcome limitations in the additive manufacturing process.

Module 4: AM Design Cycle – Examines the unique design considerations and workflows required for successful additive manufacturing implementation, including leveraging tools for specific DfAM strategies.

Module 5: AM Business Case & Economics – Equips participants with the business acumen needed to justify and implement AM solutions within their organizations.

Throughout the program, participants will engage in hands-on collaborative team exercises designed to reinforce learning and provide practical application of the concepts presented. Continental breakfast and lunch are provided each day, allowing participants to remain fully focused on the learning experience. On Day 3,attendees will meet at the Advanced Technology Center for class and a facility tour.

Target Audience

This course is intended for organizations across the Defense Industrial Base (DIB) and Maritime Industrial Base (MIB) that are evaluating, adopting, or scaling additive manufacturing capabilities in support of DoW programs.
