A High-Tech, Hands-On Summer Experience

2016ccatwebsite_studentfavpixThe Young Manufacturers Academy (YMA) is a manufacturing-themed, experiential, eight-day summer program that introduces middle grade youth to Connecticut’s high-tech advanced manufacturing industries. The program includes hands-on activities, simulation-based learning, virtual machining environments, travel to industry locations for on-site interaction with manufacturers, and a mock career fair.

YMA is a partnership with the Connecticut Technical High School System and is funded through the Connecticut Department of Economic & Community Development’s Manufacturing Innovation Fund.

Who is eligible?

Students entering grades 7 – 9 in the fall.

What does it cost?

There is no charge for the program.

What does it offer?

  • Experiential opportunities.
  • Real-world applications of science and math concepts.
  • Use of industry tools and CAD software.
  • Career awareness/readiness activities.
  • 21st century skills development.
  • Industry-based field trips.
  • Family capstone event.

When & how do I apply?

Applications are now being accepted for the 2018 Young Manufacturers Summer Academy program!  

Academies will be held at the following Technical High School locations for programs that introduce students to manufacturing through experiences in the machine shop, workshops, industry site visits, and a Career Fair capstone event.

Session 1: June 25-28 & July 2-3, 5-6

  • Platt Technical HS, Milford
  • O’Brien Technical HS, Ansonia

Session 2: July 9-12 & July 7-19

  • Goodwin Technical HS, New Britain
  • Kaynor Technical HS, Waterbury

Session 3: July 23-26 & July 31-August 3

  • Cheney Technical HS, Manchester
  • Eli Whitney Technical HS, Hamden

Session 4: August 6-9 & August 13-16

  • Bullard Havens Technical HS, Bridgeport

Additional Academies will be held at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) that offer activities and workshops introducing CNC manufacturing, 3D printing, CADD, and robotics, along with tours, site visits, and a capstone Career Fair.

Session 1: July 9-20
Session 2: July 23 – August 3
Session 3: August 6-17
