DePaolo students present STEM project as ‘Shark Tank’ ideas

(Record Journal, 5/23/17)

Sixth-graders at DePaolo Middle School are presenting their science projects to a team of “sharks” modeled on a popular television show.

Sixth-grade science teachers Amy Capobianco, Toni-Ann Rock and Krista Tibbetts worked with students to design a system to filter storm water runoff. Rock said students have done projects involving Science, Technology, Engineering and Math or STEM for three years, but this was the first year the presentations were given in a “Shark Tank” setting. The ABC reality show features grownup entrepreneurs who pitch business ideas to a panel of famous venture capitalists.

The students presented their inventions to a panel of parents, community members and firefighters. Rock said the television show aspect gave the students a chance to present the ideas in a real world environment.
