Services for high tech firms

High technology firms will find a wide range of services which are available through CCAT. Many of CCAT's programs are geared toward helping these companies expand their range of products and connect with partners, suppliers and service providers that can help companies grow. And because many of these programs are funded through a range of federal or state grants, services are either free or significantly discounted for eligible companies.

Benchmarking
A key facet of improved efficiency is knowing how a business compares with its competition; in other words, benchmarking. Benchmarking is a major service provided by CCAT's Manufacturing and Supply Chain Initiative (MSCI). This service is provided to manufacturers and other businesses to help them evaluate their productivity and opportunities for improvement. The benchmarking process allows for a focused assessment of technical capabilities, operating efficiency, lean maturity and market potential.  The assessment tool also provides specific opportunities for improvement.

Energy Funding Services
CCAT's Energy Initiative can connect businesses and other entities with grant programs and other assistance to help trim costs, optimize use and find alternative sources of energy.

Quality Training
The Connecticut Quality Council (CQC), which is part of CCAT's Manufacturing and Supply Chain Initiative (MSCI), offers a wide range of programs and services aimed at helping organizations in all sectors to improve their quality level, productivity and efficiency. Workshops are developed to provide comprehensive and practical knowledge aimed at successful culture change for the benefit of customers, companies, and employees. Public workshops offer diversity of participant perspective and experiences. CQC also provides private workshops and facilitated hands-on sessions at customer sites or at CCAT’s facility in East Hartford. Conducting a program within an organizational setting allows a company to experience customized content with company-specific exercises. CQC instructors are highly experienced practitioners, and educators who have the ability to custom design and copyrighted their own material. Instructor backgrounds range from professional engineers, certified quality engineers, certified quality auditors, to Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award examiners and Ph.Ds

Renewable Energy
CCAT’s Energy Initiative works with state and local government, renewable energy advocates and other stakeholders to promote advanced renewable energy technologies. This includes working with the Connecticut Agriculture Wind Initiative to identify appropriate sites for wind turbines, and the Low Head Hydropower Initiative, which works with the state, educational institutions and other stakeholders to identify appropriate sites and technologies for hydropower in Connecticut.

Educational Partnerships
CCAT's Education Initiative spearheads a number of efforts to develop strategic partnerships aimed at offering programs to improve education and workforce development in the areas of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

Biodiesel Promotion
CCAT's Energy Initiative administers Connecticut's Biodiesel Production and Distribution Grant Program, in partnership with the Department of Economic and Community Development. This program funds Connecticut biodiesel producers or distributors looking to advance and strengthen their business capabilities.

CCAT's Energy Initiative performs energy analysis to help businesses find more efficient ways of using energy.

Energy Planning
Energy planning represents a significant mission of CCAT's Energy Initiative, which encourages technically supported and environmentally sound energy plans for local communities. CCAT uses a comprehensive process to identify and balance community energy loads with renewable resources, transmission and distribution capabilities and the use of clean and efficient technology. CCAT can help manufacturers and other energy-intensive businesses evaluate their energy needs and find optimal ways to reduce both cost and waste. This includes finding ways to integrate alternative forms of energy, such as fuel cells.

Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Promotion
CCAT's Energy Initiative is involved in a wide-range of activities aimed at promoting the growth and use of hydrogen/fuel cell technology to meet the region's energy needs. CCAT also administers the Connecticut Hydrogen/Fuel Cell Coalition.

Incubator Space
CCAT operates an in-house incubator which houses technology-focused start-ups.  We offer some of the region's best incubator space along with providing tenants access to different programs to assist them in managing and growing their businesses.  With two existing facilities and one under development, we currently have over a dozen existing clients that live in a collaborative environment with CCAT's Initiatives, Centers and Laboratories, and their fellow technology based businesses and academic partners.

Laser Applications Laboratory
CCAT's Laser Applications Laboratory (LAL) researches and field-tests potential new uses for lasers to solve manufacturing, repair and overhaul problems. The LAL conducts laser materials process development  and assists in implementation in the areas of drilling, welding, additive manufacturing (cladding), marketing, cutting, machining, coating removal, surface modification and localized heat treatment.

Modeling and Simulation Theatre
The Modeling & Simulation program operates a stereo three-dimensional theater which can be used for virtual factory modeling and other manufacturing optimization tools.

Incubator Company Funding
CCAT administers the state of Connecticut's Small Business Incubator Program (SBIP), which provides up to $30,000 of funding to a company based in a formal business incubator in the state.

Nanotechnology Funding
CCAT can help companies to obtain funding for research, development and commercialization of nanotechnology. This includes CCAT's Manufacturing and Supply Chain Initiative spearhead The Applied Nanotechnology Consortium (TANC). It also includes the CT SBIR Office, which involves businesses and universities in a grant process that fosters nanotechnology research and potential commercialization.

Laser Evaluation
CCAT's Laser Applications Laboratory performs equipment evaluation and initial system design for the use of lasers in manufacturing settings.

CCAT Laser Applications Laboratory performs a wide range of activities aimed at field testing and training companies in the use of lasers to drill, weld, cut, machine, mark and notch, as well as research into additive manufacturing, design review and process feasibility.

Manufacturing Optimization Research
CCAT's Modeling & Simulation program researches and field tests applications of software technology for improving manufacturers' efficiencies. This includes a wide range of services aimed at optimizing manufacturers' efficiency, as well as training to help companies tackle efficiencies-related issues. Among the area that optimization services are available: assembly sequence development, computer-aided design (CAD), computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), electronic work instruction analysis, factory modeling, interactive online NC, virtual NC programming and robotic work cell design and offline programming.

Nanotechnology Services
CCAT works with a number of partners and organizations that are researching applications of nanotechnology. Business Plan Coordination
 CCAT can help connect new businesses with other business and market analysis providers.

Conference Coordination
CCAT's Manufacturing and Supply Chain Initiative assists manufacturing companies in creating mutually beneficial, joint marketing efforts. This includes one of CCAT's major events, the Air Show Exhibit Program, in which local aerospace companies participate in an annual trip to either the Farnborough International or Paris Air Show.
