Building a Talent Bridge: State Launches Initiative to link Companies with University Nanotech Talent
EAST HARTFORD, Conn. -- In partnership with the State of Connecticut's Office of Workforce Competitiveness, the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc., through its CT SBIR Office, is connecting Connecticut industry with leading-edge nanotechnology development through the Nanotechnology Fellowship Bridge pilot program. Five team projects have been developed involving Connecticut businesses teamed with researchers at UConn and Yale.
Mystic MD, Inc (Groton), Dymax Corporation (Torrington), Teleflex Medical (Coventry) Precision Combustion (North Haven) and Anchor Science (Branford) will work with graduate students and professors from Yale University and the University of Connecticut to collaborate in cutting-edge research. The grant money flows to the universities to support graduate and post doctorate students who will work on faculty-led nanotechnology research activities. Grants range from $25,000 to $55,000 each, and will support activities through June 2008.
The objective of the new "CT Nanotechnology Fellowship Bridge" program is to build and strengthen the talent pipeline between research universities and small businesses interested in nanotechnology. During the 8.5-month program period, companies will provide regular guidance and mentoring to a university team working on a research project under faculty supervision. The program will provide students with exposure to cutting-edge technology companies and challenging projects developing a “talent bridge” that reinforces the opportunities for them to remain in Connecticut.
The Connecticut Office of Workforce Competitiveness (OWC), with guidance from its Nanotechnology Advisory Council, will fund the multi-faceted Nanotechnology Development Program. OWC has designated the CT Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Office at the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology (CCAT) to facilitate, design and administer the program.
The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. is a non-stock, tax exempt corporation that works in partnership with industry, government and academia to strengthen technology led economic competitiveness. The CT SBIR Office, established in late 2004 as an initiative of CCAT, was created with funding from the Office for Workforce Competitiveness to help small businesses in Connecticut capture federal SBIR grants. CCAT is located at 222 Pitkin Street • Suite 101, East Hartford, CT 06108. For more information contact Deb Santy at 860-282-4209 or visit: http://www.ccat.us/sbir.
