East Hartford: On June 6, 2010, students  in East Hartford will be running lemonade stands in a competition for college scholarships. Students will be doing everything from designing the stand to setting the price.  The Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT) and East Hartford ChildPlan are working together to bring Lemonade Day to East Hartford, Connecticut.

With Goodwin College as title sponsor, East Hartford is joining the ranks of dozens of other communities across the country to make a difference in the lives of tens of thousands of young entrepreneurs.    In addition to the profits owners could earn, Maffe Financial Group has generously sponsored scholarships to be deposited into a 529 plan in the name of the winners of the Best Tasting Lemonade, Best Looking Stand, and Best Business.

Lemonade Day was started four years ago in Houston, Texas, by Prepared4Life with the goal of offering a fun and engaging educational program to promote the ideas of entrepreneurship, business ownership, and community giving.  Children learn the basics of starting and running a business, including setting goals, planning, finding investors, site selection, advertising, purchasing, product development, accounting, banking, and charity.  There are many successful entrepreneurs that learned these basics and started their careers with lemonade stands as children.  This program is open to children living or going to school in East Hartford.

"Entrepreneurship is an integral component of any economic development strategy," said Elliot Ginsberg, CCAT President and CEO.  "At CCAT, we support programs that encourage new business creation and are thrilled to bring this exciting program to the Northeast for the first time."
