EAST HARTFORD: The Town of Windham working with the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT), announced the award of a grant for $255,000 from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) for local energy assurance planning. The grant will support CCAT, the Towns of Windham and West Hartford, and the Cities of Ansonia, Waterbury and Bridgeport to reduce the impact of energy supply disruptions at mission critical facilities.

"This is an excellent opportunity to leverage local expertise, CCAT's experience, and federal funding to ensure energy reliability for the residents of the Town of Windham", stated Ernie Eldridge, Mayor for the Town of Windham. "We're very excited to have been chosen by the DOE. We are the only award in Connecticut, and one of two awards in all of New England."

The objectives of the energy planning project are to: 1) strengthen and expand local government energy assurance planning and resiliency, (2) reduce the impacts from energy supply disruptions, and (3) create jobs and save jobs in energy assurance planning at the municipal level.

The project will address the need to comprehensively assess critical facilities and their functions, energy requirements, and energy management options, including the use of distributed resources through local integrated planning. The planning process will help to encourage identification and development of community-supported solutions to enhance energy reliability and protect the environment and community resources.

"This project represents significant public value and is consistent with state and federal policy objectives," stated Joel Rinebold, director of Energy Initiatives at CCAT. "We are pleased to add CCAT's expertise to a project which will be of substantial benefit to improve energy management in the participating towns and the State."
