Porter-Jinan CATALYST ™ Program
Explorations in Transportation and Global Climate Change
Seventh and eighth grade students from Horace W. Porter School in Columbia, Connecticut and their Chinese sister school, Jinan Foreign Language School in Shandong Province, have spent this past year taking part in CATALYST-China™, a program that integrates scientific research and technology to explore real-world problems. Students have used online tools and hands-on science kits to investigate the influence of transportation on the environment. The groups have collaborated electronically, sharing PowerPoint presentations about their schools and hometowns. Students have maintained a blog where they post their thoughts on different issues and have “met” via live video conferences, where they learned more about each others’ lifestyles and discussed the research they have done on global warming and alternative transportation options.

The Porter-Jinan CATALYST ™ Program has not only provided students with a unique opportunity to learn more about each others’ cultures, it has also created a community of global citizens. As the next generation of 21st century leaders, student teams from Connecticut and China have worked jointly to create this website about the relationship between transportation and global climate change, and present suggestions on alternative transportation energies to reduce the effect on the environment in not only their local communities but also the world.
Please browse our website to learn more about the effect transportation has and will have on the environment, what some different options may be, and what can be done to make changes.
CATALYST™ is a program of the Connecticut Center for Advanced Technology, Inc. (CCAT), a not-for-profit organization that works in partnership with industry, government, and academia to strengthen technology-led competitiveness.
