Sales Engineer

REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering
DEPARTMENT: Value Stream


POSITION SUMMARY: Responsible for estimating & developing standard part methods and bill of materials so that the customer requirements are delivered accurately and consistently thru MRP. Select and layout sequence of operations for most effective process considering operational sequence, standards, and machine capabilities, identify tooling, jigs and fixtures as required. Ensure quoting and processing guidelines are followed with every level of detail applied.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Business Development
• Respond to quotes within appropriate time and bid closing requirements
• Maintain up-to-date understanding of industry trends and technical developments that effect target markets
• Establish & maintain industry contacts that lead to sales
• Work with our Business development manager to secure existing customers, and investigate new prospects.

Estimating
• Build thorough cost and process estimates through MRP, incorporating customer specifications into the estimate by working from blueprints, sketches, CAD files or other information, including material and subcontract cost, material handling methods, tooling and resources required to produce and handle product to develop a manufacturing process plan and identify proper work center
• Plan improvements in methods to ensure quality and cost for best method of manufacture
• Keep abreast of new equipment and tooling technologies. Work with Dir of Engineering to prepare ROI for new capital.
• Answer technical question on product characteristics and intent from customers, prospects and co workers
• Consult with Manufacturing and/or Purchasing personnel in determining best manufacturing/cost methods
• Understand GD&T practices and lean principles
• Understanding and utilizing the following basic decision making process so quality and timely decisions will be made that are supported and understood:
o Understand your authority in the decision making process including involving those affected by the potential decision and those who have meaningful knowledge so they can contribute facts and opinions, if need be
o Identifying and understanding the criteria for a successful decision and utilizing the help chain (Chain of Command) to communicate pertinent information
o Convert existing non-standard, or make new work to a standard method.

PRIMARY PERFORMANCE PARAMETERS:
• Company Goals:
o Profit – Ensuring accuracy in developing process, and costs to quote. Strive to incorporate Continuous Improvement in every process.
o Bookings & Shipments as communicated – On time delivery of process plans. Accurate labor estimates to ensure accurate start dates.
o On-Time Delivery – Ability to complete essential functions on time per established guidelines.
o Quality – Deliver accurate, clear, detailed process instructions to the floor.
o Safety – Ensure safe manufacturing methods are established and incorporated into the traveler.
• Key Initiatives:
o Continuous Improvement– continually reduces costs by looking for new ways to do things i.e. better material buys, improving the efficiency of the manufacturing processes and the operations workforce by reviewing Production Detail reports. Work closely with production and ME to meet these objectives.
o MRP – Fully implement and utilize MRP. Engineer jobs in quote module and workbench to effectively flow down customer contract requirements to the Manufacturing.
o Workforce Development– Ensure good communication. Utilize others to aid in process. Encourage high performance from others.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
• A genuine belief in disciplined processes, including quality assurance methods (i.e., ISO & AS) and a willingness to analyze, challenge and change processes, if needed, to create a more efficient environment and culture. Must also understand how to communicate these transformational changes to a diverse workforce.
• Knowledge of manufacturing processes and aerospace alloys
• Ability to use & understand and interpret external documentation such as CAD files, blueprints and specifications
• Ability to read, understand & produce 2D & 3D CAD models and drawings.
• Working understanding of the metals fabrication industry for single turret CNC lathes, and 3, 4, and 5-axis machining of Aerospace work, gauging, & fixturing
• Self-starter who is comfortable with limited guidance
• An understanding and ability to implement lean to create more efficient flow and continually improve upon these implementations
• Computer literate (Windows, MS Office, CAD-Solid Works, CAM –Mastercam, MRP, E-mail)
• Good written and verbal communication skills
• Understanding of the metals fabrication and/or machining industry with a strong focus on Aerospace
• Organizational and time management skills
• Self starter with ability to multi-task and prioritize work day/projects independently

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION REQUIRED:
• Ten (10) years experience in contract manufacturing; AND
• Engineering degree; OR
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Desgin Engineering Manager

 

Reports To:   Director of Fenn Division


Organizational Unit:  SPX Precision Components

 

Accountability:
Lead and oversee the design and execution of standard and custom machine design projects from conceptualization to final on site commissioning.  Provide technical expertise in collaboration with functions across the organization to achieve project goals on a national and international level. Work closely with production to identify and prioritize product roadmaps.  Use strong analytical design and project management skills along with product expertise to meet customer requirements.
                               
Essential Functions and Duties:

  • Provide technical direction and project management guidance to the team of engineers and/or contractor resources.

 

  • Keep a strong focus on design for practical manufacturability with sensitivity to fit, form, function, feasibility, cost, and on time delivery
  • Design, analyze, and evaluate systems, products or components, requiring a high degree of technical expertise from concept to release of drawings and bills of material.

 

  • Design and develop complex assemblies and apply advanced computer programs, analytical techniques or control strategies to effectively meet customer requirements and resolve problems.
  • Participate in cross-departmental group investigating problems, developing solutions and preparing related recommendations and reports.

 

  • Represent engineering in meetings and conferences; interact with customers to resolve significant technical issues and develop related action plans.
  • Participate in, and assist production and others involved in a variety of shop floor fabrication matters.

 

  • Actively participate, recommend, and initiate improvement in our EH&S practices and procedures.

Complexity of Tasks:
Requires strong verbal and written communication skills along with advanced interpersonal skills. Qualifications:
Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.  Seven years experience of machine design on mechanical and electro-mechanical devices, hydraulics, and pneumatics.  Experience in rolling mills or rotating equipment and AutoCAD.  Inventor software required.  Familiarity with electrical components, controls, and the ability to read electrical schematic diagrams a must.

Quality Assurance Manager

Sterling Engineering a manufacturer of medium to large complex machined parts servicing aerospace, ground energy and other technical industries has an immediate opening for a Quality Assurance Manager. We are looking for candidates with exceptionally strong leadership skills who embrace new technology and possess advanced quality systems experience within an AS9100 environment. As an integral part of our senior management team you will play an active role in strategizing and setting the direction for our continued growth and profitability. Additionally, you will play an active role in continuous improvement efforts by supporting existing improvement initiatives as well as identifying and selecting those areas in need of improvement.


Core Responsibilities: Initiate, implement and maintain quality improvement activities to continuously improve manufacturing quality. Monitor and analyze process/product outputs, identify systematic problems and opportunity areas. Lead the expansion and sustainment of our quality culture throughout our internal organization as well as our supplier base.


Requirements: 4 year technical degree, minimum 5 years experience in aerospace manufacturing environment (prefer complex machining environment).Solid metrology and mechanical layout experience is necessary. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills are required. Successful candidate must have demonstrated successful experience in Lean implementation, driving waste out of the quality system and developing cost effective means of assuring the highest quality standards. You must be an effective leader, communicator and have the ability to build a solid quality team within the organization. Hands on working experience with Six Sigma, PCP, FMEA and VSM is a must.
